How often should you water?

There's nothing better than a beautiful green lawn but in an area that is often short of water with expensive water rates it's important to understand how much water your lawn really needs.

A simple way to see if your grass really needs a drink is the old fashioned footprint test. Simply walk across the lawn and if you can see your footprints, you have a thirsty yard. Alternatively if the lawn turns a dull green colour. In reality in Northern Rivers area Mother Nature waters lawns fairly regulary and you shouldn't need to water lawns that regularly. However, newly planted lawns or during a long, summer you will need to water if you want to maintain a lush, green lawn ready for Marvellous Mowing to maintain!

When should you water?

The best tip is to give your garden a heavy soaking but not too often.

Never water in the heat of the day. There really is little point watering between 11am - 3pm, particularly during summer! Your precious and expensive water will be lost to wind and evaporation.

Watering a night isn't ideal either. Whilst a moonlight hose before bed might be relaxing it can encourage mildew and fungus.

The two best times for watering are between 6am - 10am or between 4 pm - 7pm. Of course those are probably your busiest times of day so my recommendation is to stay away from hand hosing and invest in a good sprinkler!
